Reliable Multimedia Transmission over non-Reliable Networks: Advanced Source/Channel Coding Techniques
General Description:
This project has the following objectives.
1) To investigate and evaluate the performance of advanced joint source/channel coding techniques for multimedia signal transmission (in particular, images and video) both at the packet and the symbol levels. We will consider innovative optimization techniques to distribute redundancy among different parts of the bit stream, at the symbol level, taking into account different cost factors such as distortion, delay, transmission power. As for the problem of packet losses, we will consider the use of cross-packet error correcting coding techniques, and redundant bases (frames), which have been recently proposed in the literature.
2) To define a scheme for the integration, information exchange and overall optimization of the techniques, which typically operate at different network levels (application, transport and data link).
3) To make the considered techniques operative in the framework of a specific application, i.e., audio-video communication among mobile users connected through a wireless ad-hoc network. This application is a paradigm for future Information Society scenarios.
