Short curriculum vitae

Francesco Trevisan was born in Treviso, Italy, in 1964. He graduated with honours in "Ingegneria Elettrotecnica" (Power Electrical Engineering) in 1988 at the University of Padova (Italy).

Since 1991 he has been researcher at the Istituto Gas Ionizzati of the National Research Council (CNR) in Padova working, with the "Magnet System" group, at the electromagnetic design of the experimental machine RFX (Reverse Field eXperiment, 2 m major radius, 0.5 m minor radius, designed for 2 MA plasma current) for research on magnetically confined nuclear fusion.
As a member of the Magnet System group, he worked on the assembly phase and on the electrical, mechanical and thermal tests of the poloidal magnets (Magnetizing and Field Shaping windings) and of the toroidal magnets. He also assisted in the integration of the magnets with their power supplies. During the assembly phase, he met and worked with the staff of the Magnet Department of ABB, Milan (I), LABORDE&KUPFER, Lion (F), controlling the manufacturing process, defining and carrying out the factory tests.
He was Engineer in charge of the commissioning of the Global Fast Protection System (SGPR) of RFX and in particular of the Magnet Fault Detector system (RGM). During this phase he met with the staff of the Power Electronic Department of ANSALDO at Milan (I) working together with them on developing the final design of the system, defining and carrying out the on site test specifications.
As Engineer in Charge of the Magnet System, he assisted in the first experimental program of RFX plasma operation to achieve a 800 kA plasma current.
He worked on the feasibility design of a double-null magnetic configuration for the RFP plasma. Moreover, he worked on the theoretical formulation and on the numerical implementation of a dynamic code for the PLasma Contour IDentification (PLA.C.ID) using magnetic measurements (pick-up, coils, flux probes and Rogowski coils) during the plasma discharge.

In 1993 he obtained the postgraduate Diploma degree in Plasma and Thermonuclear Fusion Engineering from the University of Padova with a postgraduate thesis on "Synthesis of the Equilibrium Magnetic Field for the Vertical Stability of an Axisymmetric Plasma".

From 29-6-1995 to 1-9-1995 under a EURATOM staff mobility contract,he worked on the MST experiment (Madison Symmetric Torus major radius 1.5 m, minor radius 0.5 m, plasma current 500 kA) at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (USA). He studied the design and realization of a passive circuit for driving correction coil currents at the poloidal gap of the MST device in order to reduce impulsive radial field errors.

In 1995 he joined, as research assistant, the Department of Electrical, Management and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Udine (Italy), where, from 2000, he is associate professor teaching "Numerical Models for Fields and Circuits".

From 25-10-1996 to 8-12-1996 he joined the JET (Joint European Torus) experiment at Abingdon (UK), being in charge of the research line on "Vertical Plasma Instabilities at unitary q configuration" within the Plasma Configurations Group.
From 7-7-1997 to 6-9-1997 he joined the Electrotechnical Laboratory (ETL) at Tsukuba (Japan), being in charge of the research line on "Determination of the Plasma Position for the TPE-RX Machine".

His research interests have been initially focused on the analysis, synthesis and optimization of magnetic configurations mainly in magnetically confined plasmas for fusion research. Moreover, he is active in the computational electromagnetism community working on the mathematical modelling and on the numerical formulations for the solution of Maxwell equations by means of the so called "Discrete Geometric Approach" from statics, quasi-statatics, up to wave propagation problems.
Applications deal with eddy-currents analysis, coupled problems (MEMS), design of devices for electromagnetic non destructive evaluations, biomedical applications such as in vitro electrical tomography of trombous formation, modelling of quantization effects in nanoscale devices, and modelling of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells.

Since 2003, F. Trevisan, together with prof. R. Specogna, is being developing a scientific code named GAME (Geometric Approach to Maxwell's Equations) implementing the Discrete Geometric Approach to solving static, quasistatic and wave propagation field problems. This scientific code is used by universities, research centers and industrial laboratories.

In this topics he matured a solid scientific expertise, recognized at international level and documented by more then 110 scientific papers; he joined research projects from the Italian Ministry of Instruction, University and Research (PRIN and FIRB projects) and he collaborates with Boston University (USA), Jagiellonian University (Poland), Université de Liège (Belgium), Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (Germany), Tampere University of Technology (Finland), G2Elab laboratory of Grenoble (France).
He is a member of the Editorial Board of the COMPUMAG, CEFC, ACE, OIPE, ISEF international conferences on computational electromagnetism. He is reviewer for the following international journals: IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, Research in Nondestructive Evaluation. He was a member of the scientific and organizing committee of the 5th Workshop on Advanced Computational Electromagnetics (ACE'09), held in January 2009, at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Rome (http://ace2009.uniud.it/).
